In early September 2021, Councilmember Krekorian, Mayor Garcetti, Ken Craft, CEO of Hope of the Valley Rescue Mission and various dignitaries formally launched the 77-cabin 150-bed Whitsett West tiny homes facility near the corner of Saticoy and Whitsett in North Hollywood, the third such community to open in the Councilmember's district during the year.
Whitisett West Tiny Homes Village Opens!
The land upon which Whitsett West sits had for years been a dumping ground for trash and the site of encampment fires; an eyesore and a danger to the nearby community. Councilmember Krekorian worked with Caltrans and the Department of Recreation and Parks to repurpose the land for tiny homes, the newest form of bridge housing in Los Angeles. Each unit has air conditioning, heat, windows, storage space, and doors that lock from the inside. For people who had been living exposed and vulnerable on the streets - especially women - having one's own secure and comfortable space is life-changing.
The facility began accepting residents September 21.
