Van Nuys

Van Nuys was founded in 1911 and named for Isaac Newton Van Nuys, one of its developers. In the town’s early days, farmers, who were drawn to the area’s flat lands, helped boost local land sales that led to the quick development of the area. It was annexed by Los Angeles in 1915, after completion of the Los Angeles Aqueduct, providing it with the water required for further growth. Van Nuys was the first new stop on the San Fernando Line of the Pacific Electric Railway red cars system, which boosted its early land sales and commercial success.

North Hollywood

North Hollywood was founded in the late 1800s. It quickly developed into an agricultural community, producing vast amounts of wheat, peaches and other crops. Despite the devastation by the 1938 flood, North Hollywood continued to grow. During World War II, it was home to many airfields. After the War many of those airfields were transformed into suburbs for returning veterans, resulting in a population boom.

North Hollywood has had a vibrant arts community with the NoHo Arts District, which includes many theaters, art galleries. Dance studios and cafes, at its core. Today, North Hollywood is home to very diverse population of nearly 90,000 residents. Rapid residential and commercial development alongside the additions of the Metro Red and Orange Lines are transforming North Hollywood into a metropolitan center and a regional transit connector.

Laurel Plaza's Bright Future

nohowest_1.JPG

The Los Angeles City Planning Commission just voted overwhelmingly to approve NOHO West, a critical redevelopment project that will revitalize Laurel Plaza and make this East San Fernando Valley commercial corridor thrive once again. This is a huge step forward for what I believe will be the cornerstone of a bright commercial future in the area. Securing a worthy redevelopment project here and in Valley Plaza has been my top economic development priority since I took office in January 2010. With NOHO West, we can all look forward to 24+ acres of top-notch, brand new retail, entertainment, office and housing options for Valley residents.
