LA Approves Historic Earthquake Safety Law

LOS ANGELES - The Los Angeles City Council unanimously approved a measure to retrofit nearly 15,000 building in the city with seismic safety measures.

The new ordinance, which was signed into law by Mayor Garcetti, will be the toughest in the nation. The measure would allow owners of soft-story building seven years to complete the mandatory safety upgrades requirements while owners of concrete building will have 25 years.

The Dept. of Building and Safety will send information on the new law to building owners, along with instructions for compliance.
